The interior features a grand entrance hall, and the theater space is dominated by a massive chandelier and a proscenium arch decorated with gilded figurative sculpture. A colonnade of paired columns screens colossal arch-headed windows above a severe rusticated basement. The Opera House is one last Beaux-Arts structures to employ the classic Roman Doric order. In 1951, the Japanese Peace Treaty was signed here. The United Nations held its first conference at the Opera House in the spring of 1945, and later drafted and signed their charter next door in the Herbst Theatre.
Serving as a memorial to those who served during the first World War, it was home to the San Francisco Opera and, until 1980, the San Francisco Symphony.
